Most flaws on the GMAT stem from an author making a conclusion that’s too strong for the evidence, or ignoring other possibilities, or confusing cause and effect. They often rely on a faulty assumption.

Common Flaw Categories (Your Cheat Sheet!)

While there are many specific logical fallacies, the GMAT usually tests a few common types. Recognizing these patterns will save you time:

  1. Correlation vs. Causation: Just because two things happen together doesn’t mean one caused the other. Example: “Ice cream sales and crime rates both increase in the summer. Therefore, eating ice cream causes crime.” (Flaw: Ignores a common cause like hot weather, or just correlation.)

To weaken this argument, you’d want an answer choice that shows this assumption might be false. What could make Sarah not get into a top business school, even with her 720 GMAT and Elmwood background?

For example, a strong “weaken” answer for our Sarah argument might be:

“Admission officers at top business schools recently announced that for the upcoming cycle, they will place significantly more emphasis on applicants’ leadership experience and less on standardized test scores.”

Why does this weaken? Because it directly challenges the underlying assumption that Sarah’s GMAT score (the primary evidence presented) is still the crucial factor for admission. It introduces a new factor that could make her admission less likely, despite her strong score.
