Or, “The battery isn’t dead.” That’s a possible reason why the car won’t start, but the author has already concluded it’s out of gas. We’re looking for what makes that specific conclusion plausible given the premise.
The assumption here is: “Being out of gas is the only reason why the car won’t start, or at least the most likely reason, that the author is considering.” Or, more precisely: “The car needs gas to start.” And also, implicitly, “There isn’t enough gas in the tank right now.” If the car didn’t need gas to start, or if there was plenty of gas, then the conclusion wouldn’t make sense, would it?
The GMAT will usually focus on assumptions that fill a specific gap in reasoning, not just general facts of the world.
The Negation Test: Your GMAT Superpower
Alright, grab your cape! The Negation Test is arguably the single most powerful tool for tackling GMAT assumption questions. Once you master it, evaluating potential assumptions becomes much, much clearer.
How Does It Work?
The concept is beautifully simple:
- Identify the conclusion and the premises of the argument.
- Look at each answer choice, treating it as a potential assumption.
- Negate that answer choice. In other words, make it false.
- Now, ask yourself: If this negated statement is true, does it destroy the original argument? Does it make the conclusion impossible or highly unlikely, given the premises?
- If negating the statement destroys the argument, then congratulations! You’ve found the true assumption.
- If negating the statement leaves the argument unaffected or only slightly weakened, then it’s not the assumption.
Why is this so effective? Because an assumption must be true for the argument to hold. If you make it false, the argument has to crumble. It’s a direct test of necessity.
Let’s Try It With an Example:
Argument: “A recent study showed that students who ate a healthy breakfast before their exams scored, on average, 10% higher than those who skipped breakfast. Therefore, schools should implement a mandatory breakfast program to improve student test scores.”
Premise: Students eating breakfast scored higher.
Conclusion: Schools should implement mandatory breakfast programs to improve test scores.
Now, let’s look at a few potential assumptions (and test them):
Potential Assumption A: “Students from wealthier families are more likely to eat breakfast.”
- Negate A: “Students from wealthier families are not more likely to eat breakfast (or are less likely, or there’s no correlation).”
- Does it destroy the argument? Not really. Even if wealthy kids don’t eat more breakfast, the correlation between eating breakfast and higher scores might still hold, and the conclusion about a mandatory program could still be considered. The argument is about breakfast’s impact, not socioeconomic status’s impact on breakfast habits. So, A is probably not the assumption.
Potential Assumption B: “Eating breakfast causes students to perform better on exams.”
- Negate B: “Eating breakfast does not cause students to perform better on exams.” (Perhaps it’s just a correlation, and some other factor, like general organization or parental involvement, causes both eating breakfast and higher scores).
- Does it destroy the argument? Absolutely! If eating breakfast doesn’t cause better performance, then implementing a mandatory breakfast program won’t improve test scores as the argument claims. The whole point of the program is based on a causal link. This looks like our assumption!
Potential Assumption C: “Schools have enough funding to implement a mandatory breakfast program.”
- Negate C: “Schools do not have enough funding for a mandatory breakfast program.”
- Does it destroy the argument? This makes the implementation difficult, but it doesn’t destroy the logic of the argument that such a program would improve scores if implemented. The argument isn’t about feasibility, but about the efficacy of the program in boosting scores. So, C is not the assumption.

Common Assumption Traps and How to Spot Them

The argument assumes there is a direct causal link and no other confounding factors are at play.
2. Scope Shifts and Bridging the Gap
An argument might start talking about one thing (Premise A) and conclude something about a related but distinct thing (Conclusion B). The assumption bridges the gap between A and B.
Example: “Our company offers excellent employee benefits, including generous health insurance and paid time off. Clearly, our employees are highly motivated and productive.”
Assumption: Excellent employee benefits lead to (or are correlated with) highly motivated and productive employees. Without this link, the conclusion doesn’t follow. The argument assumes a direct relationship between benefits and employee motivation/productivity.
3. Representativeness (Sample to Population)
Arguments often draw a conclusion about a whole group based on a small sample or specific observation. The assumption is that the sample is representative of the larger group.
Example: “I surveyed three students from Springfield University, and all of them said they loved their psychology courses. Therefore, the psychology department at Springfield University must be outstanding.”
Assumption: The three students surveyed are representative of all psychology students at Springfield University, or at least a significant portion. Also, that “loving courses” equates to an “outstanding” department (bridging the gap again!). The small sample is assumed to reflect the entire population.
4. Absence of Alternatives / No Other Factors
Sometimes an argument will present a solution or explain a phenomenon, assuming there are no other viable solutions or no other contributing factors.
Example: “To reduce traffic congestion in the city, we must build a new bypass road.”
Assumption: Building a new bypass road is the only effective way to reduce traffic congestion, or at least the most effective/feasible way the author is considering. It assumes no other solutions (like improved public transport, staggered work hours, etc.) would be equally or more effective, or that these other solutions are somehow already ruled out. The argument considers only one path.
5. No Change Over Time
If an argument uses past data to make a prediction or conclusion about the present/future, it often assumes that conditions haven’t changed in a way that would invalidate the past data.
Example: “Last year, our sales increased by 15% due to our aggressive social media campaign. We should launch an even larger social media campaign this year to achieve even higher growth.”
Assumption: Market conditions, consumer behavior, or the effectiveness of social media campaigns have not significantly changed since last year, such that an even larger campaign would yield similar or better results. It assumes the past trend will continue under similar strategies.

Once you have your premises and conclusion, ask yourself: “What’s missing here? What unstated idea must be true to connect these premises to this conclusion?” Look for leaps in logic, shifts in scope, or unproven causal links. This is where you’re trying to pre-phrase the assumption.
Step 3: Pre-phrase Your Own Assumption
Before even looking at the answer choices, try to articulate, in your own words, what you think the assumption is. This helps you avoid being swayed by tempting distractors. Your pre-phrased assumption might not be exactly what’s in the answer choices, but it will give you a strong direction.
Step 4: Use the Negation Test on Each Answer Choice
This is where the magic happens. Go through each answer choice one by one. Negate it. If negating it completely destroys the argument, then you’ve found your answer. Be rigorous. If the argument merely weakens but doesn’t collapse, it’s not the assumption.
- Remember, a true assumption is necessary. If you make it false, the argument must fall apart.
