This is it. This is the strategy that will change your assumption game. It’s called the Negation Technique, and it’s truly powerful because it provides a concrete test, taking the guesswork out of the equation. No more squinting at options, wondering “Is this it?”
How It Works: A Simple Step-by-Step
Here’s the deal: an assumption must be true for the conclusion to hold. If an assumption isn’t true, the conclusion cannot logically follow. The Negation Technique leverages this fundamental truth.
- Identify a potential assumption: Look at the answer choices and pick one you think might be the assumption.
- Negate that choice: Turn it into its opposite. If it says “X will happen,” negate it to “X will NOT happen.” Be careful with negation; for “some,” the negation is “none”; for “all,” the negation is “not all” or “some not.”
- Plug the negated statement back into the argument: Read the original premises, then your negated assumption, and then the original conclusion.
- Ask yourself: “Does the conclusion still hold?”
- If the conclusion CRUMBLES (meaning it can no longer be true or is severely weakened), then congratulations! You’ve found the correct assumption.
- If the conclusion STILL HOLDS (even if it’s slightly less convincing), then that choice is NOT the assumption. Move on to the next one.

Let’s try this with an everyday scenario. This is how you’ll approach GMAT questions.
Stimulus: “Our city recently implemented a new program where residents separate all their organic waste for composting. Since the program began last month, the amount of waste sent to landfills has decreased significantly. Therefore, the composting program is effectively reducing landfill waste.”
Conclusion: The composting program is effectively reducing landfill waste.
Let’s evaluate some potential answer choices using the Negation Technique.
Potential Assumption 1: “The total amount of waste generated by residents has not significantly decreased since the program began.”
- Negate it: “The total amount of waste generated by residents HAS significantly decreased since the program began.”
- Plug it back in: If residents are just generating less waste overall, then the decrease in landfill waste isn’t necessarily due to the composting program. It could just be that people are throwing away less stuff in general.
- Does the conclusion hold? No! If overall waste has decreased, the composting program might not be the reason for less landfill waste. The conclusion CRUMBLES. This is a very strong candidate for the assumption.
Potential Assumption 2: “Most residents are participating in the new composting program.”
- Negate it: “Fewer than most residents are participating in the new composting program.”
- Plug it back in: If fewer than most are participating, could the program still be effectively reducing landfill waste? Yes, it’s possible. Even if only a few dedicated people participate, their efforts could still lead to a significant reduction, especially if they were previously high waste producers. The conclusion might be less robust, but it doesn’t necessarily crumble entirely.
- Does the conclusion hold? Yes, it arguably still holds. So, this is NOT the assumption. The argument doesn’t absolutely require most residents to participate for the conclusion to be true, just enough participation to cause the observed effect.
See how that works? The negation of the correct assumption absolutely demolishes the conclusion. It’s an unambiguous test.
Why Negation is Effortless
This technique isn’t just effective; it’s also remarkably straightforward. It takes the subjective “feeling” out of assumption questions and replaces it with a clear, objective test. You’re not guessing anymore; you’re applying a logical filter. With practice, you’ll negate choices in your head almost instantly, making your CR problem-solving much faster and more accurate. It builds confidence, which is a huge advantage on test day!
Beyond Negation: Developing Your Assumption Instincts
While negation is your best friend, understanding where assumptions typically hide will make you even faster. You’ll start to develop an instinct for them, which complements the negation technique beautifully.
Look for Gaps in Logic
The core of finding an assumption is identifying a leap the author makes. Where do the premises end, and the conclusion begin? Is there a piece of missing information that, if true, would logically connect the two? Always ask yourself: “What else needs to be true for this conclusion to be valid, given the evidence?”
For example, if the premise is about an increase in sales, and the conclusion is about an increase in profit, what’s missing? An assumption about costs. The author assumes costs haven’t increased proportionally, or even that they’ve remained stable, allowing the sales increase to translate to profit.
Common Assumption Patterns

The assumptions usually revolve around the feasibility of the plan, its effectiveness, and the absence of unforeseen negative consequences. The author assumes the plan will work as intended and won’t introduce new problems.

Always Question New Information
Often, an argument will introduce a new concept or term in its conclusion that wasn’t present in the premises. Whenever you see this, a red flag should go up! The assumption almost certainly connects that new piece of information to the existing premises.
Example: “Our company has invested heavily in employee training programs. Therefore, our productivity will increase.”
Premise: Invested in training.
Conclusion: Productivity will increase.
The new information is “productivity increase.” The assumption bridges the gap: “Employee training programs lead to increased productivity.” Without that link, the conclusion makes no sense.
